Ode to the Daddy Voice

In honor of Father's Day this week's column honors that which I value most in our parenting relationship: The Daddy Voice.

"This is how a night in our home plays out:

Me: Kids, it’s time to get PJs on and brush your teeth. Can you hear me? Let’s go. Upstairs. Now. That means everyone… Kaleb, Leah, Zack. Upstairs. Go, go, go. It’s getting late. It’s time for bed. Hustle, everyone, now. Why are you all still sitting there?

Enter the Daddy Voice: Did you guys just hear your mother?

And that’s it. Kids are scattering like a piƱata just broke in their bedrooms. Excuse me?"

I wonder why this is?? Are dad's just inherently more scary/sersious/imposing? DOubt it.. They just know mom is a softy.

In my house they hear mom's voice all the time, so it's like camping by a busy road...after about a half hour-you don't even notice the cars anymore. But Daddy is home much less so therefore commands more attention. Maybe I should try not talking to my children so much. I am implementing the whispering--I think it was in the Ensign I read about it.
